How To Move A Bed Up A Flight Of Spiral Stairs

06 . 09 . 2012

When moving into a home that features a flight of spiral stairs to move between the two storeys, you may be wondering how on earth you would go about moving a bed upstairs. By following the below instructions, you and your movers should be able to carefully maneouvre your bed to the top of the stairs with as little problems as possible:

Step 1: If the base of your bed is a box spring, you should begin with this first, as it is likely to be the most difficult part. Lay it over the open end of the flight and have some help you to move it up and around the spiral stairs using the handrail as a guide.

Step 2: If the base of your bed is a frame, take it apart and carry it upstairs piece by piece. Once the entire frame is on the second storey landing, you will be able to put the whole thing back together.

Step 3: To move the mattress upstairs, lay it horizontally against the handrail and have someone help you to carry it up. The mattress should curve just enough to get it around the bends in the flight of stairs where needed.

If you have a balcony (indoor or outdoor) you may find that you can lift the entire bed up using a pulleys and ropes system, which will be much easier than struggling to get it up the spiral stairs. Remember to fold a mattress in half when moving and to never cut or break your box spring or frame to avoid irreparable damage.
