19 . 08 . 2015

There are plenty of reasons why homeowners opt for timber staircases – they can provide the space with a sense of warmth, they can complement almost any kind of décor, and they make a great first impression (to name a few). But what sort of timber species is best suited to the construction of your staircase? We have outlined just some of those that we work with here:

Blackbutt

Blackbutt – This species can be used for any staircase component and is also suitable for projects that require a fire rating. It’s a hardwood that is found in both New South Wales and Queensland. Its appearance can vary from golden yellow through to pale brown.

Karri

Karri – This species, also known as Western Australian Blue Gum, can be used for any component. It’s a hardwood that is only found in Western Australia. Its appearance can vary from reddish brown through to pale pink, and it possesses an interlocked grain.

Merbau

Merbau – This species can be used for any component and is a hardwood that is imported from South East Asia or Papua New Guinea. It can sometimes be found in Queensland, too. Its appearance can vary from yellow brown through to reddish brown.

Pine

Pine – This species can be used for any staircase component, from the stringers to the posts. It’s a softwood that is widely found across Australia and is a fantastic choice if you wish to paint the flight. Its appearance can vary from white through to pale yellow.

Spotted Gum

Spotted Gum – This species can be used for any staircase component and is also suitable for projects that require a fire rating. It’s a hardwood that is found in both New South Wales and Queensland. Its appearance can vary from light coffee brown through to dark brown.

Victorian Ash

Victorian Ash – This species can be used for any component and is particularly popular for those planning on staining or clear coating. As it’s name suggests, it originates in Victoria and its appearance can vary from pale pink through to yellow brown.

We hope that this information has helped you to choose the best possible species for the construction of your timber staircase. If you are having trouble choosing, we recommend taking a look at the timber that is used elsewhere through your home (as the same or similar species will look best together).
