Effective Use Of Space Under Your Stairs

28 . 04 . 2017

If you have chosen a closed or concealed staircase, you might be wondering how to best use the space underneath it instead of simply walling it in or leaving it empty. One of the main limitations of the space under the stairs is the angled ceiling, but there are plenty of ideas out there that allow you to use the space effectively and to its full advantage.

We’ve outlined some of our favourite ways to put this space to use, from types of storage to actual functions, in the list below:

  • Hinged Door Storage
This is a great idea, as it can leave you with lots of different sized spaces to store all of the clutter that you don’t want on show. You can also have a range of hanging and shelving areas, all hidden behind hinge doors for a sense of cohesiveness on the outside. Turn one space into a coat cupboard and another into centrally located cleaning storage.

  • Individual Pull Out Sections
If you have quite a wide staircase and feel that cupboards would be too deep, individual pull out sections are a great alternative. Simply pull out the section you want to access and you’ll be able to reach right to the back without hurting yourself. You could also use discreet handles so that it simply looks like a solid wall when the cupboards are closed.

  • Open Shelving
When the stairs are located in an actual room as opposed to the hallway, shelving and provide more of an open plan feel. You could opt for long shelves that span the length of the staircase or you could choose more of a cube design (many people argue that this best uses the space). The shelves can be used to store everything, from books to knickknacks.

  • Home Office/Command Centre
If your home is too small for its own dedicated office space or you want your kids to be out in the open when using the computer, the space under the stairs can also be used to create a home office or command centre. A built in desk provides ample work surface, whilst some wall shelves and built in storage can fill the rest of the space effectively.

  • Powder Room
Many people struggle to find space for a downstairs toilet – but who wants to go upstairs whenever they need to go? Depending on the head height available, you could turn the space under the stairs into a fully functional powder room. Often, the toilet is placed closest to the sloped ceiling so that you can stand at full height when washing your hands.
