What Railing Will Match My Contemporary Stairs?

13 . 11 . 2013

In many cases, your contemporary stairs will be the focal point of your home and having the right railing is important for not only providing safe passage but for adding to the design. You might be wondering, however, what type of railing will match your stairs – this can be quite a hard question to answer. If you have a contemporary style, you could try:

Contemporary-Stairs

  • Metal
This is probably the most common railing choice because it seamlessly fits into a contemporary home. It is often as simple as a metal bar connected to thin, metal supports. They can, however, look a little out of place on stairs that are only constructed out of timber.

  • Wooden
This railing choice is starting to become popular, as homeowners have realised that it matches contemporary stairs whilst adding a sense of warmth. To keep with the design, you should opt for thinner bars and supports in lighter coloured timbers. To ensure that they don't look out of place, match the timber to others used in the home.

  • Glass
This is another choice that is slowly starting to become popular, but it is one that many homeowners still steer clear of because they fear the glass becoming broken. As long as the glass is strengthened and glazed, however, it will be an attractive addition to your contemporary home.

  • Combination
Why not try out a combination or metal and timber or metal and glass for your railings? A timber bar with metal uprights is one of the most popular combinations because it adds strength and interest to the design. Metal and glass is also becoming more popular, but there aren’t many people who would combine timber and glass.

Choosing the perfect railing for your contemporary stairs could be as simple as looking at them and taking note of the other materials that have been used in the construction. And, if you still aren't sure, try getting some samples of the materials you could choose and hold them against the stairs to see how they look – you’ll have made a decision in no time!
