How To Add Carpet To Your Spiral Stairs

30 . 07 . 2012

If you already have or you are planning on adding some spiral stairs to your home, one of the problems that you may run into is how to carpet them. This is because these stairs tend to feature open-backed treads that do not have risers in between them, which means that you cannot run the one length of carpet down the whole flight.

Step 1: Measure the size and shape or each step. Even though they will have slight curves, measure in a straight line (from the top right hand corner to the top left hand corner; bottom right hand corner to the bottom left hand corner; top right hand corner and bottom right hand corner; and so on).

Step 2: If you want to leave a space either side of the carpet, use a tape measure to work out how big this space should be. You can then subtract it from your width measurement.

Step 3: Cut out a piece of carpet according to the measurements you have taken for the spiral stairs. Take the first pad and place it face down on its designated step. Using a marker, trace the curves of the step onto the pad so that you can cut it down to size.

Step 4: For timber stairs, you can staple the carpet pads directly into place, but for other materials (such as metal) you will need to consult the manufacturer for the best way to attach carpet.

When choosing a carpet for installation on your spiral stairs, try to go for patterns that are reasonably small and tight. This will be much easier on the eyes than a big and bold design. You should also avoid vertical patterns, as they will not line up.
