How To Protect Staircases In Melbourne When Painting The Walls

23 . 07 . 2012

If walls enclose your staircase in Melbourne you may be worried that, when it comes time to paint them, you will get drips all over your steps. To prevent these stains and marks from occurring, you should make sure that your staircase is covered well in advance of any paint coming anywhere near them. Use the following tips to ensure that your steps are protected:

Begin by taking a roll of duct or masking tape and run it from the side of the top step all the way to the bottom of the staircase. Make sure that you attach the tape as close to the wall as you can and do this on both sides of the step. Measure the staircase with a tape measure, then cut a piece of painter’s plastic so that it is around 2 inches narrower than this measurement and double the length (to make up for the drop between each step).

Tape the plastic to the top tread of the staircase in Melbourne, then stretch it out down the length of the steps. Make sure that it overlaps the tape you laid down before by about an inch on either side. Tape down the plastic. Cut a 12 inch slit in the plastic over the edge of each step. Then, apply a piece of tape to the slit to make sure that the plastic doesn’t move.

The walls of your staircase in Melbourne are now ready to be painted without fear of stray drips and runs being left all over your timber or carpet. For an easier option (but only for carpeted staircases) you could instead run a painter’s cloth down its length.
