Tips For A Functional And Attractive Stair Design

09 . 10 . 2012

Whilst coming up with a design for how the stairs in your new or renovated home will look can be a fun project, it could turn into an absolute nightmare if you’re not careful how you go about doing it. You could have an utter disregard for the existing décor of your home or a finished product that is not functional at all. Use these tips to make sure that you get your stair design right first time around:

  • Continue your home’s theme by looking at its architecture and the way that you have already chosen to decorate it. For example, if you have hardwood floors throughout your whole home, you should use the same timber in the construction of the stairs.
  • Complement materials by matching each element of the stair design with each other. This means that the material you choose for the handrail and balustrade should complement the materials you choose for the treads. For example, timber tends to go well with timber or wrought iron.
  • Choose functional materials so that your stairs will be safe for people of all ages and mobility’s to navigate. Don’t choose materials, such as natural stone, that pose a slip hazard, or install nosing or carpet to counteract this. Timber, however, should be okay by itself.

Achieving a stair design that is both functional and attractive should be the primary concern of anyone building or renovating their home. After all, the wrong design could cause all sorts of problems for homeowners, including stairs that don’t mesh well with the existing décor of the home at all or ones that are simply unsuitable for use. Make your design decisions wisely and you will surely reap the benefits.
